Two and a half years ago I left my role as Director of Regulatory Affairs at a national consulting firm to become an independent consultant — partly because my daughter was starting high school and I wanted a schedule I actually controlled, and partly because I'd sat through one too many retreats where my vision for the work no longer matched the company's. Once you see that gap, you can't unsee it.
Since then I've built a firm from one person and a laptop to a team of eight, and most of what I've learned about running a business, I learned by getting it wrong first. In this session I'll talk candidly about what going independent actually costs versus what the "be your own boss" posts leave out: the control you gain, the risk you carry alone, and the point where a team stops being a nice-to-have and starts being what lets you take on bigger work at all.
My hope is that this is useful whether you're weighing going independent yourself, already out on your own and figuring out the next step, or just curious what that path looks like day to day.
